Prepare yourself for a Surfing Course or Surf Lesson with the O'Neill Surf Academy

If you are thinking of, or have already booked a surfing lesson or course with us we'd love to share with you a few simple steps you can take to give yourself a real headstart when it comes to surfing.

Surfing is a great way to get fit, and stay in shape. As with all sports, surfing requires a level of physical exertion, but you'll be having so much fun you'll barely notice the workout. You don't necessarily need any preparation to take part in any of our courses and camps to have the time of your life learning to surf. Having taught people of all ages and abilities for over 15 years we've taught people who've never dipped a toe in the ocean or done an ounce of exercise in their life! Surfing is accessible to all, but to make the very most of your time with us a bit of preparation will go a long way in helping you progress and improve quickly.

 SWIMMING:

Ok, not everyone loves getting in the pool, but a few laps at your local leisure centre pool will get your arms used to moving and a bit of resistance, which is very similar to the paddling you'll have to do to catch waves. Even if you only do a handful of lengths (try using a front crawl stroke as it's most similar to the paddling action) you'll reap the rewards once you hit the waves.

If you've not done much swimming before, you're not confident in the pool or you don't seem to get anywhere when swimming, why not book yourself in for a swimming lesson or two for a few pointers on technique.

YOGA

Surfing requires you to use your core strength and balance. Yoga is a great way to get your body used to different movements, and will help you keep good control. Core strength is improtant to help you balance on the surfboard, and control it as you ride in. Yoga is not only fun to do, but is also a great wat to relax.

SWISS BALL

Using a swiss ball to get yourself in shape is ideal for helping you witha  lot of movements that are required of our body on a surfboard. The instability of the ball helps your body's agiliy and reflexes - once you hit the water you'll definately feel the benifits of even a few sessions on a swiss ball. Check our Taylor Knox Surf Excersises DVD for some of the best surf specific excercises on a swiss ball you'll find anywhere (this is the dvd our instructors use to help keep them fit for their surfing)
